We have just come back from the States where we spent a delightful week with my step daughter Rachel and her husband Cedric, exploring Arizona - Scottsdale, Lake Havasu, the Grand Canyon and ending up in Vegas. The Grand Canyonis spectacular and awesome and worth seeing. I have a mixed love affair with Vegas - - top hotels, top shows, gourmet dining, the city so alive 24hours a day – what’s not to like – I guess I am tempted to have a flutter on the gambling but consider myself an investor in Vegas as I never seem to win … .perhaps that is why I have the love hate relationship with the city.

I have just returned from visiting Shanghai. Suzhou, Guilin and Hong Kong. I first visited Shanghai over 30 years ago in 1979. The Bund was of course there, every person was wearing blue or green trouser suits and the highest building was about 8 stories high, the wide roads had traffic jams of China’s people on bicycles with hardly a car in sight, we were given a choice of a government hotel to stay in. I have been back a few times since and always see such dramatic changes.

Have you seen it yet? I am talking about the new 2012/13 Bales brochure. If I say so myself, it is looking fantastic and the new iced blue colour on the cover signifies the celebration of our upcoming 65 years of trading.

As I write this the World Scout Jamboree is underway in Sweden. You may not know what relevance that has to us – especially if this is your first time to the blog. Bales Worldwide are looking after the travel arrangements of the UK Scout Association which number nearly 4,000 Scouts and helpers. Oksana – who has managed this project so fantastically well over the last year – and I are at the Jamboree as I write this.

So we have now had the Open Championship Golf and what a very popular victory it was for Darren Clarke. It is not surprising really – he is such an affable genuine person – not that I know him you understand but that is how he comes across to me.

Despite the fact that personally I don’t take to Andy Murray – I was really hoping he would win Wimbledon. It is always such a boost for the country when we have winners of sports or in fact anything. I should are Andy Murray – I think there is a fine line to cross between confidence and arrogance – and for Andy to be more ‘likeable’ – I think he needs to be a bit more self depracating – but that is down to media training and I know he is only young. However listening to Nadel who is also only young – he gave a wonderful interview about not winning and you naturally warmed to him.

I am lucky enough to have a beautiful and elegant sister, Joanna, who lives half an hour from Hay (I'm sure I have my own attributes and can't wait to discover them). So, it was the best of both worlds to be able to see her recently and attend the Hay Festival, something that has long been a dream for me. I was really impressed. It is now sponsored by the Telegraph, who gave it great coverage. I realised that many of the talks I pre booked had a travel theme, in as much as they were given by travel writers, such as A A Gill, Paul Theroux and many others.
