The Brazilian Independence Day came about when Portugal took ownership of Brazil. After sending Prince Pedro (later to be known as Emperor Pedro of Brazil) in to rule over the company, Portugal soon lost their power, as Pedro became a fair and loved ruler, who saw the need for Brazil to become separate from Portugal.
In 1821 Portugal attempted to seize back power over Brazil resulting in an up roar. Pedro who was originally of Portuguese royalty, swore his allegiance to Brazil on September the 7th ,1822, and began the fight for Brazil’s independence from Portugal. After a series of political setbacks, international recognition was finally given to Brazil when Britain and Portugal signed a treaty recognising Brazilian independence in August 1825.
Today this momentous occasion is celebrated throughout Brazil in a fanfare of excitement. People who visit Brazil at this time will witness all sorts of celebration, from coming together in the streets and the roads with banners, balloons, streamers, and with people waving the national flag with pride. The celebrations are often kicked off with a performance of the Samba and Bossa Nova. However the Brazilians celebrate their own way, with individual displays of song, dance, and processions. Every year there is a military procession in front of Brazil’s most important people including the Brazilian president.
