The Shanghai Expo 2010, China

The Expo 2010 has opened in the City of Shanghai

The Expo 2010 in Shanghai is now open. The Expo showcases over 250 countries and international organisations from around the world, in an event themed around sustainable development.

The opening of the Expo involved 2,300 performers and musicians from around the world. The 2,300 performers were a great representation of the Expo’s slogan “Better city, better life in music and dance”.
The opening also involved tens of thousands of lasers, which lit up the Shanghai waterfront, in one of the biggest ever multimedia events. The Chinese local media report the event cost up to £38 billion ($58 billion), which is more than was spent on the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Expo 2010 is set to be a huge success with over 70 million visitors expected to visit over the next 6 months that it is open.

However not all people are happy about the Expo. Local residents are unhappy about the increased security measures (an additional 8,000 police have been brought in to help Shanghais 46,000 police officers). As well as this markets have been closed down to make room for the Expo’s new car parks. 6 people have already protested about having their homes destroyed to make room for the additional space needed to carry out an event of such magnitude.

The 2010 expo is open from 1st May to 31st October 2010.
