On April 1st 2010, the famous site of Machu Picchu was re-opened to the public, which included the famous actress Susan Sarandon (as seen in “the Stepmom” and “Witches of Eastwick”).
Susan Sarandon was amongst hundreds of visitors who travelled by traibn to the Inca Citadel as it welcomed its first guests since the horrific flooding (see earlier posts) which took over 2 months to complete repairs.
Susan was not only visiting the site, she also played a big part in the re-opening ceremony. Along with some of the locals, Susan took part in a ceremony which asked for the blessing of Mother Earth and other rituals at the ruins. After the ceremony was done Susan sipped the local coca tea (designed to help with altitude sickness, as the ancient site sits over 8,000 feet above sea level).
Workers have now finished repairing the first 17 miles of tracks, but services have not been restored all the way to Cuzco yet (set to be finished in June). Until then tourists can simply catch the bus to nearby Piscschuo and get the train to Machu Picchu from there.
