Machu Picchu will reopen in April!

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Machu Picchu will be open to the public again on the 1st of April.

The historical site was closed last month, after the heaviest rainfall in over a decade left rail roads, and transport roads closed and un-usable. Since then the people of Peru have been working hard to get the rail links and roads usable again, so that the site can re-open.

Many people who intended to visit the site worried that the rain and floods may have damaged the sites history and culture. Government officials responded to this by stating that the site of Machu Picchu has been left un-touched.

The site of Machu Picchu was built in the mid 15th Century and it lies 680 miles south of Lima. It is by-far Peru’s most popular tourist attraction bringing over 800,000 visitors each year.

The flooding that occurred (due to the extensive rainfall), left he ground unstable which resulted in significant landslides, which injured many tourists. Due to the un-accessible roads tourists who were visiting the Inca Ruin at the time were left stranded, and had to be air lifted out.
