Inspiration Travel Ideas for Canada & Alaska

Rugged charm, unforgettable scenery, and wide open expanse care all typical of Alaska. Breathtaking views, fascinating history, pleasant towns and a relaxed atmosphere ensure that Yukon and Alaska are both enjoyable and memorable.

Yukon

The smallest and most westerly of Canada’s territories, the Yukon takes its name from the meandering waters of the ‘Great River’ that carves its way through its remote and beautiful landscapes. A sub-arctic climate zone, covering nearly 500,000 sq km of mountains, glacial-fed alpine lakes and untouched wilderness, it contains evidence of the oldest human settlements in North America, as well as a rich history of First Nation and European involvement. The region is also home to an array of wildlife including grizzly, elk, bald eagles and some of the best sports fishing in the world.

Top of the World Highway

Connecting the Yukon territory with Alaska, this remarkable road covers some 105km, starting from across the Yukon River near Dawson City to the US border, snaking through a landscape of hills and dramatic valleys that give way to seemingly endless vistas across the Yukon. Narrow and winding is a journey to be savoured and what better way to see the ‘top of the world.’

The Goldrush, Yukon

On 17th July 1897 word reached Seattle of an unprecedented find of gold in the Yukon. Within 6 months some 100,000 prospectors were rushing for the remote river valleys around the town of Dawson: the Klondike Gold Rush had started! Less that a third completed the journey through the Yukon and few ever earned any of the fortunes promised. The 716 km Klondike Highway more or less follows the Gold Rush Trail.

Great River Journey

A unique 8-day wilderness safari invites you to the Great River travelling some 600km through the historic and scenic grandeur of the Yukon wilderness, affording an ideal opportunity to explore the region’s natural and cultural treasures.

The close proximity of the Yukon to Alaska means that these territories can be easily combined in a single journey through the north west regions. The largest state in the U.S, Alaska can be explore overland as well as by boat.

Dawson City, Yukon

Steeped in the character and adventure of the Klondike Gold Rush, Dawson City grew on the back of the 19th century rush for gold. As an ideal base for exploring the Klondike, the city has a variety of cultural attractions and historic sites to enjoy.

Prince William Sound, Alaska

Lying amongst the magnificence of the Chugach National Forest, surrounded by coastal mountains, Prince William Sound is a spectacular natural haven for an array of marine life such as sea lions, sea birds and natural fauna.

Alaska

Glaciers in Alaska

Some 10,000 years after the final retreat of the last great Ice Age, Alaska still finds itself locked in the steely embrace of ice giants, carving and surging their way across its vast wilderness. Many of Alaska’s stunning glaciers are accessible by plane, boat and even on foot, presenting a vast array of nature’s most dazzling creations.

Anchorage

Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage sits at the centre of the great Alaskan wilderness. Lying on the shores of the Cook Inlet, beneath the Chugach Mountains, this is Alaska’s vibrant heart, a rich fusion of culture and nature and the gateway city for Alaskan cruises.

Polar bear, wolf, bald eagles and grizzlies still roam the pristine landscapes and its rich coastal waters are the hunting ground of orcas and humpbacks, blue whales and sea lions.
