Appraisals

It has been full on at Bales which is good.   I am in the period of doing appraisals with my direct reports and I also receive my own appraisal.  I think appraisals are a good discipline so long as the balance is right in that they should not be just on any weaknesses or indeed the strengths but a fair mix of both so it can be a tool to learn and develop but also feel valued in areas of the excellence delivered.   I will let you know how mine goes!!!

I am of course thrilled to see how well our brochure has been received and that already it has inspired so many of you to book – thank you.

I had to take my husband to the airport very early this morning as he is attending a conference in Athens – he has become the traveller which is ironic whilst I am very much more in the office. Call me sad but I still enjoy the buzz of the airport – goodness it was so busy which is a good sign. Watching people who are seeing off for their own different reasons – business, holiday, and meeting family – full of anticipation of what is lying ahead of them and I was very excited and rejoicing in the fact so many people are travelling.

This was Terminal 5 at Heathrow and it is magnificent. Yes, BA may have had some glitches at the opening but it is such a pleasurable terminal to be flying in or out of and the operation is very slick.  My congratulations to BAA and BA.

I went to see Othello with Lenny Henry starring – he is absolutely first class  and deserves the wide acclaim he has received.  In fact all the cast  were excellent and we became completely absorbed in the play which is how it should be. The theatre was packed and London had a real buzz about the place.

I genuinely think the mood that I witnessed earlier in the year when out and about is lifted and that more people are feeling optimistic about the year ahead – be it cautiously and perhaps quietly.

There is a lot going on that is great about this country – I know we all have the odd whinge or moan but personally I would not want to live anywhere else – and I always value the huge freedom we have.  I believe that the grass can often appear greener on the other side but to a great extend we have safety and most of us don’t live in fear of our lives. That is something worth celebrating.

Anyway enough of the chat and philosophy best get back to my day job. Speak again soon…
