Paraty and the surrounding area
Lying in the heart of such a well preserved region of natural and cultural wealth, half-way between Rio and São Paulo, the two sprawling cities, the region has everything; pristine beaches, tropical rainforests and a magnificent historical heritage.
Paraty is just 30 kilometres north of Picinguaba. The town was the richest in Brazil during he gold ages – between the 17th and 18th centuries. Travelling further south brings you to Ubatuba, the seat of the Iperoig Peace in the 16th century and the treaty between the Portuguese and the Indians which led to victory over the French. The town has since become the hub of the coffee trade.
