Australia Bay of Fires

The Bay of Fires, Tasmania, has been voted by the Lonely Planet as the number one region to visit in previous years.

Lying on the edge of the Mount William National Park, Captain Tobias Furneaux gave the bay its’ name in 1773, when he saw fires along the beach from the Aboriginal people, leading him to believe that the country was densely populated. Abundant evidence of this occupation by Aboriginal people can be seen along the coast today.

Described as, “white beaches of hourglass-fine sand, Bombay Sapphire sea, an azure sky – and nobody. This is the secret edge of Tasmania, laid out like a pirate’s treasure map of perfect beach after sheltered cove, all fringed with forest. It’s not long since the Bay of Fires came to international attention, and the crowds are bound to flock. Now is the time to visit,” it’s no wonder this is the ultimate destination to visit.

The coast extends from Binalong Bay in the south, to Eddystone Point in the north. Divided into three sections, the Bay can be explored in the Northern section, from the north outlet of Ansons Bay to Eddystone Point, lying within the Mount William National Park. The middle section lies in the vicinity of Ansons Bay, whilst the Southern section is the conservation area. This 13km stretch of coast between Binalong Bay and The Gardens.

From its long, lonely beaches to its teeming wildlife; from its unique history to its abundant plant life, Mount William National Park is a place of constant fascination. Nestled in the far north-east corner of the State, the park is an important area for the conservation of Tasmania’s coastal heathlands and dry sclerophyll plants.

With fishing, camping, bird watching and surfing, the Bay of Fires offers the ultimate Australian adventure.
